Materials, Tools, & Supplies

Free tools & materials class

Not everything on this list is required.
Also, see a FREE set of video tutorials  titled "Tools and Materials". I find that I use many of these in my Creative Enamel classes.
You will need to register as a "learner" in my program, but it they are free to watch.

The Creative Enamel Color Class
Optional Supply List

There are no specific projects that you will make. You can use whatever enamel colors you already own. We will be combining transparent, opaque, and opalescent enamels. We will be using foils (mainly silver foil). Not "leaf"! Most of your samples can be made using a copper base. You may decide to order new enamel colors as you progress through the lessons. Below are suggestions and what I use.

Enamel Basics

  • opaque white ( I use leaded Thompson 1000)
  • opaque black (I use Schauer 280)
  • opalescent white ( I use Blythe T8)
  • flux ( I use either Ninomiya N1/N3 or Hirosawa HS-1S)
  • opaque white for shapes: front (I use Thompson unleaded 1020)
  • enamel for counter-enamel: anything (I use Thompson unleaded 1020)

Basic Colors

  • Transparent Colors.
  • one or two colors in each color family (light and medium value)
  • three colors in the same color family: light, medium, and dark value
  • three colors that are adjacent on a color wheel: red, orange, yellow or purple, blue, green
  • one or two dark transparent colors
  • a small selection of different opaque colors, depending on your taste and choice of subject material
It is difficult for me to tell you what you need, other than the "Basics" list above. As you will hear me repeat, the answer is almost always, "It depends". Much of what you use will be a result of what you are using for your inspirational source images (photographs). We will discuss this in our first week of class and I can try to guide you when I know what inspires you. Remember that we are learning about process more than product; you can make a "blue tiger" or a "purple mountain". There are no right colors and you may even be happier to just use what you have and not worry so much about making something that is "good" or "accurate".

Firing Tools/supplies

  • trivets
  • firing screen
  • firing cloth ( i use this, from Rio Grande, Woven Fiber Kiln Disc set, item # 350049

Other Tools/Supplies

  • two pair "fine-tipped" tweezers (I use these two pairs in mu classes:            1. Regine Stainless Steel Precision 1 Pattern Tweezers, item 11528 (Rio Grande) 2.Stainless Steel Precision 00 Pattern Tweezers, Item #: 115280
  • scissor to cut foil and cloisonne´ wires ( I use Item #: 11466www.riogrande.com/product/precision-straight-tip-beading-scissors/114666#6 from Rio Grande
  • Blu-stic, for wires, larger size because it has a wider opening at the top
  • klyr-fire, for foils; smallest amount available.
  • containers to hold your enamel colors ( I like to use small medicine cups and plastic "take-out" restaurant cups.
  • Silver foil, gold foil (not silver leaf or gold leaf). I may have this available, or from enamel art supply, e-namels.com, thompson enamel.
