My Inspirations; Finding my WHY

I love Color, Layers, and Light!
My earliest memories of feeling a sense of awe and peace were the times when I hiked through the Adirondack mountains in upstate New York while attending summer camp. I loved sitting by a stream, watching the water ripple  over the moss-covered rocks. I was captivated watching the sunlight sparkle through the birch tree forests as we hiked for days and days. Back at camp on Lake George, one of the most majestic lakes in all of America, the water was a constant presence in my life. It was always there, and ever changing with the weather, wind, and time of day. On canoe hikes to the many islands, I vividly recall staring up into the night sky (we didn't have tents) and being amazed at the millions of stars flickering overhead as I fell asleep.

Growth & Change
Most of my imagery comes from my background in humanistic and performance psychology. I am fascinated with the process of human growth; how people change, grow, learn, and face fears. Whether dealt with in abstract or figurative form, my imagery is about how an individual becomes self-aware, takes risks, and assumes responsibility for their life. I explore themes of growth, pattern, movement, joy, and dreams

Balance: Control and Freedom
The technique of Cloisonne´offers both! The wire work creates a structure for the beginning of the design process. Once I get my wires/lines bent and fired into place, it is difficult to "erase" them. This limitation frees me to think about the "panes of glass" I will create within the cells. I am free to play with color, light, and texture as I build up multiple layers of enamel colors.

Our Garden
My wife has created a magnificent garden which surrounds much of our home. For much of the
year, I am surrounded by beauty. It's an ever changing bouquet of color, texture, light, patterns, and shapes.

"I am fascinated with how light passes through our environment; sunlight through the trees in the forest, light behind the clouds in the sky, and light bouncing off the surface of the ocean or lake, or through the various large and small waterfalls of a stream or river. I feel a sense of awe when I experience these phenomena. I spent 8 weeks each summer from the age of 10-15 at a YMCA camp in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. The natural beauty that surrounded me each day left an impression that still resonates within.
Now my family prefers the beach to the mountains. I love both!

Enamel seems like a perfect media for me: I can capture the light through the layers, and the combination of art and science plays perfectly into the different parts of my experience. It's not just problem-solving; it's creativity and expression.
It's my story, expressed in enamel, that I choose to share. I work to develop my skills, both technical and aesthetic, so that I can share my sense of "awe" with others as I use my enamel vocabulary to sing my enamel song to share my enamel vision.
