The Language of Enamel
Not a set of techniques—but a way of seeing

Enamel is not just a collection of techniques.

It’s a language.

A language of glass layers, built on metal--
where color, light, and structure work together.

When you begin to see enamel this way,
something shifts.

What you need to learn changes.
How you learn it changes.

You are not just following steps.
You are learning a language.

Instead of asking,
What should I make?

You begin asking,
What is happening here?
What can I change?
What else is possible?

You start to see relationships--
between layers, colors, edges, and light.

Being an enamelist means being both
an artist and a scientist.

Every time you fire enamel, things change.

The glass shifts.
The metal responds.
Layers interact in ways you can’t always predict.

Through small studies, you begin to understand these changes--
not by memorizing answers,
but by seeing patterns and relationships.

Think of it like learning to play in a band.

I sometimes think of cloisonné as a kind of band.

There are three instruments:
  • Enamel color
  • Wires
  • Foil layers of light
You can learn to play each one individually--
how it behaves, what it can do, what it sounds like.

These are your notes:
lines, shapes, edges, values, color shifts, reflections.

Then you begin to combine them.

This is where it becomes more than technique.

You start to:
  • Layer color with intention
  • Use wires to define and direct
  • Use foil to bring light into the piece
You experiment with combinations.
You listen to what happens.

And slowly, you begin to create something that feels like your own.

This is how your enamel voice develops.

Not from following instructions.
But from learning how the parts work--
and how they work together.

From making, noticing, adjusting, and combining.

From learning how to “play” the materials.
