The Art of Beginning:
Cloisonné Composition Studio

From spark to starting point to piece

Most students don’t struggle because they lack skill.
They struggle because they don’t know how to begin.
This class is about changing that.

Is This You?
You want to begin a piece…
but something gets in the way.

“I have ideas, but I don’t know how to start.
The idea feels clear in your mind--
but when you sit down, you don’t know what to do first.
“I keep thinking about it instead of doing it.”
You plan.
You imagine.
You analyze.

But the piece never actually begins.
“I feel like I should make something… but I don’t know what.”
You want to be working.
But all that comes to mind are:
  • pieces you’ve made before
  • or things you’ve seen other artists make
Nothing feels like your starting point.
“I start… but then I lose direction.”
You begin something--
but quickly feel unsure about what to do next.
“I’m not ready yet.”
If you take another class…
practice a little more…
get the right materials…

then you’ll be ready to begin.

So you wait.
“I’m afraid of starting the wrong way.”
You hesitate.

You don’t want to waste time or materials--
so you wait until you’re more certain.

A Small Shift
What if you don’t need to be ready first?
What if beginning is what makes you ready?

Where Does a Piece Begin?

Before you choose how to begin--

there’s something else:

A spark.

A spark might be:
  • something you see
  • a color combination
  • a pattern
  • a question
  • a small moment of curiosity
The spark is not the piece.

It’s the beginning of a direction.

Turning a Spark into a Starting Point

Part of the practice is learning how to take a spark
and turn it into something you can work with.

You might:
→ sketch it
→ simplify it
→ isolate one part of it
→ ask a question about it

This is where beginning starts to take shape.

Three Ways to Begin

Once you have a starting point,
there are different ways to move forward

1. Begin with a Clear Idea

Translate your spark into a full sketch.

Use that sketch as your guide as you build your piece.

→ structured
→ intentional
→ mapped out

2. Begin with a Direction

Start with a sketch or idea—but stay flexible.

As you build:
  • you adjust your wire
  • you shift your colors
  • you respond to what happens
The piece evolves as you work.
→ guided
→ responsive
→ adaptable

3. Begin Without a Plan

Start somewhere.

Add a wire.
Apply a color.
Place a piece of foil.

Then respond.
You build the piece one decision at a time.

→ intuitive
→ open
→ exploratory

Using Studies to Find Your Way

Sometimes the best way to begin
is not to begin the piece at all.

Instead, you make small studies.

You test:
  • a color
  • a wire structure
  • a foil idea
  • a combination of elements
These studies help you discover:
→ what you want to explore
→ what direction feels right
→ what you’re curious about

They turn uncertainty into movement.

What You’ll Practice

This is a practice-based class.

You’ll work with:
  • sparks
  • different ways of beginning
  • small studies
  • and evolving pieces

You’ll begin in different ways--
and discover what helps you move forward.

What You’ll Experience
This is a practice-based class.
You’ll work with:
  • sparks
  • different ways of beginning
  • small studies
  • and evolving pieces
You’ll begin in different ways--
and discover what helps you move forward.

As you practice, you may notice:
→ you start more easily
→ you hesitate less
→ you feel less pressure to get it right
→ you begin to trust your decisions
Not because you found the right method--
but because you’ve practiced beginning.

Why This Matters
If you can begin--
you can continue.
And if you can continue--
you can develop your own way of working.
